Why mine was leaking gas.. Every one should check theirs.. The rubber turned to mush.

Yeah, I'd say that is shot. Kills your gas mileage if you're pouring it all over the road. Mine leaks too and I need to replace it before I go anywhere. I had to do it in my '79 as well. How long of a piece of hose does it require?

Just shy of 2 feet.. Looks like most auto parts places sell it so thats good. I plan to also replace any remaining rubber fuel line. The part that I was worried about was finding a replacement rubber grommit for the Tank. Mine was shot as well. Luckly this guy sells them cheap. http://www.rtspecialties.net/proddetail.asp?prod=2880481 I plan to order tonight. Tomorrow night I will attempt to remove the sender (not working) since the tank is empty.. Although depending what is wrong replacements appear hard to source. worse case I'll just put it back and deal with it but I figure its worth a shot now that we have the tank empty.

I'm not 100% but I think the Aux tank in mine is metal all the way but I need to check again once the van is moved away from the wall on that side. I seem to remember yours just had a rear tank?

Yes, mine just has a single 50 gallon gas tank. You can see part of it in this picture, you can also see that the hose is leaking but it comes into the tank at around halfway up. I still have the front fuel filler door on the side but it doesn't have anything behind it.

mine looks to have the stock Dodge 30 gallon and then a 15 (or so) up front in the battery compartment  but at least that tank has a working sender unit and what I've been using since i got the Van..

The brochure lists the dual tanks as 13.6 and 26 gallons. I wondered where they stuck the extra tank in those models. I just have extra storage in the battery compartment. I wonder if the single tank thing is a late production item or not. I think Matt has the single large tank like mine.

So while the tank was empty I pulled the sender unit out. It was always reading empty.. Well it appears the Float went MIA. We looked but couldn't see it in the tank. Sender tested out ok so I ordered a new float that hopefully will get here soon. Also while I was fabing up my new and improved fuel neck I got to wondering about the stock 26 gallon tank.

Found a example of the tank
Image

Notice the Fuel neck enters low in the tank.. How does that work? Seems like it would be hard to fill the tank as fuel would be sitting in the neck all the time.

It is just me that it looks wrong? :?

Seems like you might only get 10 to 15 usable gallons before the fill stop will keep kicking because the gas level in the neck is to high...

There should be a vent tube that allows you to fill the tank. Most gas tanks fill from the side so the filler pipe is always going to be low in the tank. The fill hose in my 50 gallon tank is about half-way down as well. My '79 Brougham has the regular 36 gallon plastic tank as the vans do and it fills even lower. It had a vent tube going up to the top of the filler pipe to trap emissions.

Hopefully it fills fine then.. As soon as the new float gets here I should be able to close up the tank and take a drive to go fill it up.

Well got it back together and put 11 gallons in.. Sender works now and no leaks from the fill neck but I do have the slowest leak ever from the sending unit. Of course the one gasket I didn't order is the problem. Oh well drain the tank tomorrow and on Monday when the part gets here I can swap it out. I did replace a lot of my fuel line so that should all be in good shape now.

Looks like you could use a little rust converter paint on the tank. At least it looks like a standard van tank. I don't know what kind of sender is in my 50 gallon tank. My gauge works but isn't accurate.

By the way, the 36 gallon tank in my '79 is plastic.

I know the rustolem paint but there used to be the stuff that converts rust back to some hard.

This product is very popular although I've never tried it.

Well new gasket did the trick no more gas leaks.. Still have a grounding issue with the aux gauge as it reads way past empty randomly if the van rocks a little bit. One day I'll trace that back and find the break where its grounding out but for now my fuel system is set.

Do you just have a switch to go between the two tanks or does it automatically switch?

It was stock gauge and a switch when I got it. now its two aftermarket gauges and a switch just for the fuel line switcher. also have the nifty light above the gauge to show what tank you are drawing from.

So if you don't pay attention to the gauge you just wait until it starts sputtering to change it over?

Yeah basicly  also if the switch is not getting power the spring in it forces it to the default line that is the AUX on mine. ... I think :?

I drilled Holes for the two gauges.. Then put the switch Below.

This is exactly the switch I have that then goes to a T for the generator and the carb.

I took some pictures of my fuel filler hose this morning as I need to replace. Put some gas in it last night a it leaked again so it reminded me. Looks like this set up needs about 18" of the hose. That stuff isn't cheap either. I need to disconnect it to get the correct measurement so I don't order the wrong thing.

It's really a bugger to get much torque on the top hose clamp, so I used a 1/4" drive ratchet and socket with a mini U-joint and long extension. Mine doesn't leak now, but I still have bad gas odors after filing up. I never saw this thread before, Nick, but that is (was) one leaky hose! It makes me wonder just how safe it is to have the exhaust pipe so close to it????

Yeah, the upper clamp doesn't look like fun.

A lot of fuel hoses go right around the exhaust pipes. I'd rather it go over insted of under.

Indeed. I might be wrong about this, but it looks like the original pipes went over the axle and all the way out the back. At least that's how it appears from the discarded mounts on my chassis.

Mine has dual exhaust that exits right behind the tires. All the old pictures in the brochure and ads don't show any exhaust visible but it only shows the passenger side. I'd guess that originally they only had single exhaust that exits on the left side. I guess we could take a poll to see what the different current setups are.

On my '79 Brougham 360, it only has single exhaust and it's on the left side. It exits before the rear tires but I can see where it originally went over the axle and next to the gas tank. Don't know if it exited the side or back.

I got this filler hose from a motorhome in the junkyard yesterday for a dollar. I'm thinking I could get a steel 90 degree elbow made at my muffler shop and then I'd only need short sections of rubber as couplers.

I put my "new" hose in today. Wasn't too bad. Fortunately the clamps had hexes on them so I was able to get a 1/4" drive ratchet on the top one to get it out. The moulded hose I got was the perfect size. I'm going to look for more of them in the junkyard in the future as new hose is quite expensive.

The hose that was on mine is 2" diameter and 16" in length. It didn't look original as it had metric sizing on it.

In one of the pictures below you'll see a yellow arrow pointing to the tank filler vent tube. That does not look like a hose that is easy to change.

i suggest using newer style clamps on these so u dont have a single pressure point ..newer ones provide a more even pressure and the hose doesnt develope leaks...my gas line is leaking somewhere and i only smell it when the tank is full so i believe it to be the filler hose...i also believe i have 2 tanks since filling this tank from 1/4 tank only takes about 12.5 gallons ... mb this switch behind my drivers seat had something to do with the other tank...i asked the mechanic to look under there when he was doing other repairs he said there was a tank under there and it was working...lol...and no leaks...but the tank wasnt full at that time...i guess i will have to go searching some more..where was the other tank located?
