Just checking in to see if anyone is still alive in our group. It's been months!

Here I am! 4 months of Seattle rain with just two dry days has kept me from doing much. I sealed the top gutter, vent cap and lower trim. Put new plugs in the motor and ordered parts on-line. My research has confirmed that Gear Vendors makes an overdrive unit for the 727 transmission. This provides an extra gear between 2nd & 3rd along with a final overdrive of 78 to 1. A road test at 50 MPH will be performed first to see what kind of MPG the modification will give me. I got 12 MPG at 60 MPH coming back from Montana. Engine runs great-need tires in the back. Keep you posted.

Man. that's great mileage! is that with the over/under-drive? I don't know how you could get much better than that, but I hope you do. Are you going to buy a new one? I've been looking for used one with the 727 adaptor for 5 years.

The mpg is correct on level highways at 60 MPH, getting 10-12 over hills & passes without an O.D. unit. This was what I experience during my purchase drive from Montana to Seattle. It did not burn a drop of oil. A new Gear Vendors O.D. is around $3,500. plus installation. There were two lengths of 727's that dictate which unit to buy.

I was surprise to find that my engine will not time according to factory specs., once new plugs were installed and the vacuum advance was plugged (+/- 2 degrees at TDC is factory). The motor tends to cut out at these settings. I increased the air flow into the carb. & advanced the timing to around 5 degrees. This is where it seems to run the best. The 360 V8 motor was modified when rebuilt over 20 years ago. The receipt does not contain much info. on what was done. I will have the vehicle dyno-tested to get a better idea of what the HP/torque output is in relationship to RPMs.

Have you installed a MSD ignition? I suppose this conversation belongs in the, "Technical section?"

As described in my posts going back to day One for this group, I'm running an Edelbrock 1400 bolted to an Edelbrock Performer intake, 3" exhaust all the way through a Freeflow muffler. I also have stainless headers. The engine is a crate built by Delco Remy, the transmission was reman and sold with a new torque converter. The brakes are also new and don't drag. There are about 2,000 miles on everything in the drivetrain since I installed it about 5 years ago. It does "want" to go fast, but I keep a light foot on the throttle. I have so much dough in the whole shebang that I'm reticent about even more on an over/underdrive.

One thing that makes tuning difficult is that the new flywheel wasn't marked to match the timing marks on the pulley, so accurate timing is entirely by ear. :-) I do have the original distributor and electronics, which might be the culprit. Maybe. I would love to have EFI, if only for reduced emissions, cold starting and high altitude driving.
