The previous owner's of my GTC told me that the electric step at the side used to work but that they thought a door mat got stuck in it and that is why it stopped. When looking at it I could see what looked like an artificial grass mat sticking out so I figured that's what was wrong. When talking to Matt about his step, which he replaced, he mentioned that there was a lockout switch on the dash that controlled the step. On mine I noticed that there was a switch broken off next to the radio, right above the engine cover. To gain access I unscrewed the A/C unit from the dash which includes that area. I wanted to remove the junk radio anyway. Once I had access I saw that the broken switch wasn't connected and found a couple large wires with terminals on them. One was connected to an indicator light and the other one was just floating around back there. With my voltmeter I checked for power and found it on one side of the harness. I got a jumper wire and connected the two together. No sparks or fire so figured I wasn't going to burn the coach down. Went around to the side door and opened it and sure enough, the step works! The grass mat turned out to be screwed down to the step so I removed that. The step is kind of sluggish going up but at least I know it works. The light under there didn't come on but I'll fix that later. I also need to figure out the indicator light in the dash. Right now I've just got the wires taped off. Here's a video of the step working - http://youtu.be/-OcqbP0kiug

Nick was lucky... My step system was toast, and I discovered that there are 0 replacement parts available for these ancient devices. I found a new Quickee step complete with controls that came off of a new RV, but had never been used. The replacement process required running new wiring from the dash to the step area, and I installed a good connector strip and fuses for each circuit that are easily accessible on the underside of the entryway. The new Quickees require removal of the original FRP step cover piece to fit, but the installation looks pretty good anyway. The new version also has better safety features than the original (but it is still possible to chop off the fingers if you aren't being vigilant!), and draws less current in operation.

Oops. I neglected to also add that I removed the original (and very iffy) step support bolts, which are regular untreated steel (and undersized, with a full copper/aluminum alloy diamond plate step tread and 316 SS carriage bolts. This new arrangement eliminates point loading on the fiberglass step, is many times stronger and prevents the rust and general mess inherent in the original steel elevator bolts and gnarly steel washers/plates. I heartily recommend replacing the original step support, even if you keep the original step system.

Matt, do you know what controls the light under the step? Is it tied to the indicator light in the dash? I didn't hook up the indicator light in the dash, I just taped off the wires until I can fix the dash. I think I've fixed all the other lights in the coach except for this one and a loose one in the range hood.

So I had time to work on mine turns out the door switch was bad. Once bypassed the step opened and the light came on. The dash light always stays on for me when the ignition is on. Door works any time the lock out switch is off. So not really sure what the dash light is for other then a reminder to check it?

But I was very excited it works good and I won't have to try and replace it.

I believe the dash light is supposed to be on if you turn on the ignition and the step is extended. Maybe Matt knows for sure. I'm still trying to find a manual for this or for the coach in general. One owner said he had a copy of the GTC manual but he sold the coach to his son and said he'd ask him to get in contact with me. Hasn't happened yet.

Well my tep works great after fixing the switch however the load on the fiberglass step above makes me not want o put my full weight on it. When I get back from this up coming camping trip I think I am going to attempt replacing bolts and what not as matt describes to hopefully make it a least feel safer.

Just saw this. Is that the motor/transmission? I tried to find a replacement or repair place for months and even talked to the factory - - - Zip. I hope you're luckier!
