The Gearvendor setups are great but expensive. They're actually made here in San Diego. I almost bought a complete motorhome to get the transmission out of it.
Realistically it's probably not economical to go that way unless you're going to do an awful lot of driving. You can buy a lot of extra gas for the price of the setup, especially if you're going new. The thing I would enjoy the most is the comfort of cruising down the highway at a higher speed and lower RPM. With my Brougham I generally set the cruise at 60mph and just take my time getting where I'm going.
The other alternative is to use the 4-speed automatic that came in later trucks and vans. These are basically a 727 3 speed with a 4th gear added into the tailhousing. The tailhousing is a couple inches longer so the driveshaft has to be shortened as well. I've just heard that it's not up to the task for a motorhome. Would probably be ok with my Brougham which is at least a thousand pounds lighter than the GTC.
