Post subject:  Side Mirror Change

Unfortunately my GTC is missing its original mirrors and at some point got a pair of generic folding truck mirrors. These mirrors don't stick out enough so they added an extension for the mirror head. These extensions weren't long enough so I only had about 1/3 of the mirror being useable. Plus they flopped around and shook too much to actually be safe. I had to hold the left one while driving in order to see what was in the mirror. And they were stuck so they wouldn't fold.

I looked at replacement west coast mirrors but they are quite expensive new. I haven't found any good ones in the junkyard either. I started looking at 1980s Dodge van mirrors and how I might be able to modify them to work on the GTC. While searching around on ebay I found these replacement mirror heads that can extend out for towing. I got them for a great price and just had to go to the junkyard to get the bases to mount them. They were made for angled mounts so I had to straighten out the bend to 90 degrees.

So far I've just mounted the right hand one and it looks like it's going to work well. They extend a lot further out than the others and a nice feature is that they can be folded flat against the body. The base covers up the upper holes from the old mirror, just need to find something to put in the lower holes. I also need to add some spot mirrors.

Looks good! My Stock ones just need to be taken apart and cleaned/repainted. I do like that yours fold flat..

I finished the mirror installation over the weekend. Nice to now be able to see what's behind me when driving. I was able to just get stick-on spot mirrors in a 3 1/2" diameter and put them on the lower inside corner of the mirrors. I was going to get some clamp-on ones to put on the mirror arms but these work just fine.

I do have to say that the vertical mirrors on my Brougham are more effective since they are quite large but these ones don't block the forward view as much and the ability to fold the mirrors flat against the body is very useful where I have to park. My next step will be to install one of those fresnel lenses in the back window so I can use the inside rear view mirror somewhat. I guess a rear view camera would be most effective especially when backing up but not going that route yet.

FYI: The original mirrors were and are made by Velvac - still! Each side has a flate plate and a convex head, which are attached to a West Coast Junior-type mirror mount with a 45 degree brace attached to the lower arm. The rearward view is very stable with the original setup and the lerge convex ones really good for freeway lane changes.
