Your old rear wheel looks different than the one on mine. Mine doesn't have the nubs on the outside to hold a hub cap, instead they are on the inside. Not that I could put a hubcap on the rear anyway.

Also here are some comparison shots of the front tires to show the clearance. The 225/75-16 and 9.50-16.5 tires are very close in overall size but your new wheels are wider and look like they stick out more.

I'll get some side shots today to show width and placement. Over all I very happy. It rides nice and no real noticeable tire noise at speed. The trip this weekend will be the biggest test. I did keep the rears and the hubcaps. I took one of the old fronts and made it my new spare. Junked the old spare and other front.

Did you keep a set of your old lug nuts to use with the spare? The ones for the aluminum wheels won't work properly with the steel wheels. The angle of the lug holes in the wheels is different.

I did think to keep all the lugnuts.. I'm glad you said something though as it reminds me I need to put a set in the Hall should something happen.

I am not a mechanic but would like to add something on the subject of tires. The Hall's we have known have all had a problem with rear blowouts. When it happened to us it took out the entire back on one side of the motorhome. Blew the toilet off, holding tank and alot of fiberglass on the body. There have been theories but we never knew why it happened. The tires were almost new and in great shape. Maybe the difference in tires made in 1973 and now? Who knows.

Interesting, it seems that all of these GTCs have had this problem. Mine has some damage on the passenger side that may have been from a tire coming apart. Crazy to lose the whole back end though. I'm wondering if it has to do with the 16.5" wheels that don't have the safety bead on them.

Matt is keeping dually wheels on his GTC. I sold him a set of 16" ones so he can get away from the bad 16.5" ones. Click here to see what happens when a tire lets go.

He had the wheels powder coated and mounted 215/85-16 Goodyear Transforce tires.

Matt tells me that his new 16" front rims will not fit on the rear because the center hole is not large enough to go over the hub. He'll be keeping his original 16.5" spare which will work on the front and the rear.

Another thing to remember is that he'll have to keep a spare set of regular lug nuts in the coach in case he has to use the spare on the rear. He's using the correct flanged lug nuts on the dual rear wheels.

will it matter if i go wit a width of 7" or a 8" rim on the front? ...i know u have 7 listed ...will the 8 give it less height and more clearance...could you explain the difference? ty

That's an awfully big tire, why would you want to go with that size? In a post above you can see how a 225/75-16 fits and fills up the wheel well. I wouldn't got with anything bigger than that.

Ok, I need new wheels all around because we always need all new wheels on these things when we buy them.

I read this whole thread and I want to take my rig into les schwab this weekend, but I can't make heads or tails of what I should get ordered. I have duallys with tires that feel and look great, but I also know the rig was just sitting and used as a closet for the last 30 years, so new wheels it is!

Can someone give me some cliff notes of what to ask for so I don't get the wrong thing by accident? I don't understand what most of the numbers listed on this thread represent, diameter? width? size of my ego?

Thanks in advance!

Ps. Discount Tire refused to service my rig and said that even if they did it would cost me $3k. :shock:
Does that amount seem right?

no..wheels not 3k...the ones from summit he lists are beautiful and fuctional..and any nice 16 tire will fit on those...top dollar would be half of what the quoted you for rims and tires..WELCOME to the "hallywood" club btw

I know that this is a really old (and still relevant) thread, but a couple of comments on those Firestones I installed on 16" rims....

I went with tires that came as close as possible in O.D to the original 16.5's, which happened to also be slightly narrower cross section. In hindsight I could have gone with the next size down and been fine, especially when it comes to the right front, which will rub on the inner wheel well at full lock from time to time. The Transforce tires are harsh riding when inflated to a safe level. IF I'd had the dough I would have gone with Michelins, but I didn't.

In my personal opinion, shiny alloys look out of place on these vehicles and detract from the otherwise slippery aerodynamics of the body. I think that it's well worth the trouble of finding steel Budds that match the bolt pattern and hub requirements and proper hubcaps. Along with Nick's rims, I found wheels off a newer Chevy 3/4 ton truck that fit over the big hubs. Any good tire store should be able to assist in finding the right wheels and tires, but avoid the Big Box and chain outlets.

The prices of 16.5 tires are high because they're hard to get. Worth it to get away from them and go to 16" wheels and tires if you can.

Are you talking about a 16" wheel for the front that will also fit on the back? Does it happen to accept the Dodge hub cap?

The rears are the "deep dish" style required for mountings duals, and fit perfectly over the hub, and also the locating detent on the hub/brake drum.

Oh.... No, the fronts only work with the Dodge caps. The dually arrangement prevents any caps from working except the type that covers the entire wheel.

Ok. So you're talking about the rear wheels. Do they have the coins? Did you replace the ones you got from me?
